Income Tax FAQs
What are the income tax slabs for FY 2025-26 under the new regime?
New regime slabs: ₹0–3L = 0%, ₹3–7L = 5%, ₹7–10L = 10%, ₹10–12L = 15%, ₹12–15L = 20%, above ₹15L = 30%. Standard deduction ₹75,000 is available. Section 87A rebate makes income up to ₹7 lakh tax-free after deduction.
Which regime is better for ₹12 lakh salary?
For ₹12 lakh salary with maximum 80C (₹1.5L), standard deduction (₹50K old / ₹75K new), and NPS (₹50K): New regime tax ≈ ₹83,200 vs Old regime ≈ ₹1,12,500. New regime saves ≈ ₹29,300. However if you also have HRA exemption or home loan interest, old regime may win.
What is surcharge on income tax?
Surcharge applies if income exceeds ₹50 lakh: 10% surcharge for ₹50L–1Cr, 15% for ₹1Cr–2Cr, 25% for ₹2Cr–5Cr, 37% for above ₹5Cr (under old regime). Under new regime, max surcharge is 25%. Plus 4% Health & Education Cess on (tax + surcharge).
Is Section 80C available in the new tax regime?
No. Section 80C deduction (ELSS, PPF, LIC, EPF, home loan principal, tuition fees — up to ₹1.5 lakh) is not available under the new tax regime. Only standard deduction of ₹75,000 and employer NPS contribution are allowed in the new regime.
What is Section 87A rebate?
Section 87A provides a tax rebate making income up to ₹7 lakh effectively zero-tax under the new regime (after ₹75,000 standard deduction). So taxable income ≤ ₹7 lakh = ₹0 tax under new regime. Under old regime, rebate is available for income up to ₹5 lakh (rebate = ₹12,500).
